Did you know that it is estimated that 37% of all Google searches are image searches?
This means are over 850,000 image searches performed per minute. That is a lot of people and is well worthwhile considering when developing your own e-commerce website.
Many websites do not optimise their images for search engines so this gives you a great opportunity to take advantage of this. Some even say that having optimised images also helps your regular rankings as well.
Due to current computer limitations it is not possible for search engines to accurately review and distinguish what an image is about. Instead the way that search engines index images is by using the content surrounding the image (context) , the name of the image and the alt tags.
Generally images come with a string of random characters i.e. IMG0002.jpg, IMG0003.jpg etc. this really does not describe what the image is about. To take advantage of these image searches all you need to do is create a descriptive name for the image that relates to the product the images about i.e. blue-dress-sleeveless.jpg.
When you add an image to a website there is normally a field called the alt attribute. This lets you describe what the images in text form. This again helps to distinguish what the images about. In the HTML of a page at may look like:
img src=”blue-dress-sleeveless.jpg ” alt=”pretty blue womens casual dress”.

The other area that is used to determine rankings for images as the content surrounding that your image itself. For example if a page is about women’s dresses, the alt tag and the image names are about women’s dresses, then Google safely assumes that the image has been labelled correctly and will display to such.
While not completely confirmed could be a possibility that Google also uses the directory the images are located in to also determine what images about. So if possible it would be worthwhile to create a new directory with similar images in them.
Another good tip is to make sure we have decent quality photos and if possible without watermarks of other people’s brands. After all you are trying to make someone click on the image to go to your product page and make them interested in purchasing the product that they are viewing.
